Suicide Prevention CE for Mental Health Professionals
A comprehensive guide to suicide prevention continuing education requirements, free training resources, and evidence-based frameworks for licensed clinicians.
Why Suicide Prevention CE Is Required
Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, and mental health clinicians are on the front lines of suicide prevention. An increasing number of states now mandate specific continuing education in suicide risk assessment, safety planning, and evidence-based intervention for all licensed mental health professionals.
The movement toward mandatory suicide prevention CE was accelerated by high-profile research showing gaps in clinician training. Studies have found that many licensed professionals receive minimal formal training in suicide risk assessment during graduate programs, and that structured CE in this area measurably improves clinical competence and reduces patient deaths (Bryan & Rudd, 2006; Wyman et al., 2008).
Washington State was an early leader, requiring 6 hours of suicide assessment training per renewal cycle for all mental health licensees. Other states including California, New York, Texas, and Michigan have followed with their own requirements. The trend is toward increased standardization and mandatory training across all states.
Even where not mandated, suicide prevention CE is considered a best practice. Clinicians working in any setting where clients may present with suicidal ideation should maintain current competency in assessment and intervention frameworks.
States with Mandatory Suicide Prevention CE
| State | Required Hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Washington | 6 hrs | Suicide assessment, treatment, and management training required. Must be completed every renewal cycle. |
| California | 6 hrs | Suicide risk assessment training required for initial licensure and renewal for LCSWs, LPCCs, and LMFTs. |
| New York | 3 hrs | 3 hours suicide prevention training required per renewal cycle for most mental health licenses. |
| Texas | 3 hrs | 3 hours suicide prevention required. Specific training frameworks accepted by TSBEP and DSHS. |
| Florida | 2 hrs | Suicide awareness and prevention training required as part of the 30-hour CE requirement. |
| Michigan | 3 hrs | Training on identifying and reporting human trafficking AND suicide prevention training required. |
| Massachusetts | 3 hrs | 3 hours of suicide prevention education per renewal cycle. |
| Nevada | 3 hrs | Suicide prevention training required per renewal for counselors and social workers. |
| Colorado | 3 hrs | Suicide intervention training increasingly required or strongly recommended for licensees. |
| New Jersey | 3 hrs | Suicide prevention CE required per renewal for clinical social workers and counselors. |
Requirements vary by license type within each state. This list is not exhaustive — verify with your licensing board.
Evidence-Based Suicide Prevention Training Programs
Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS)
FreeThe C-SSRS is a standardized tool for assessing suicide ideation and behavior (Posner et al., 2011). Free training is available from the Columbia Lighthouse Project and is widely accepted for CE credit by licensing boards.
Visit training resource →Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
PaidASIST is a 2-day in-person workshop developed by LivingWorks. It provides structured suicide first aid skills. Some states specifically recommend ASIST for clinicians. Scholarships are available.
Visit training resource →Zero Suicide Institute Training
FreeThe Zero Suicide Institute offers free online training in suicide care, including Suicide Care in Systems Training, which is appropriate for clinicians in healthcare systems.
Visit training resource →SAMHSA Suicide Prevention Training
FreeSAMHSA offers free CE-eligible training on suicide prevention, safe messaging, and evidence-based interventions. Most SAMHSA courses are NBCC and ASWB-approved.
Visit training resource →QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer)
PaidQPR is a brief, evidence-based suicide prevention training available in online format. QPR Gatekeeper Training offers free CE in some contexts, particularly for healthcare providers.
Visit training resource →VA Suicide Prevention Training
FreeThe VA offers free suicide prevention training through VA TRAIN, including SAFE VET and other evidence-based programs. Available to all clinicians, not just VA employees.
Visit training resource →Suicide Prevention vs. Safe Messaging Guidelines
Some CE requirements specifically reference "safe messaging" guidelines rather than clinical suicide prevention training. Safe messaging guidelines (from AFSP, SAMHSA, and others) address how to talk about suicide in ways that do not inadvertently increase risk, particularly relevant for clinicians who consult with media, schools, or communities.
Clinical suicide prevention CE typically covers risk assessment tools (C-SSRS, ASQ), safety planning (Stanley-Brown Safety Planning Intervention; Stanley & Brown, 2012), means restriction counseling, and documentation. Both types may count toward state requirements depending on your board's specifications.
Best Practices for Clinicians: Suicide Risk Assessment
Use a Validated Assessment Tool
The Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) and the ASQ (Ask Suicide-Screening Questions) are free, validated tools recommended by the Joint Commission and the VA (Posner et al., 2011).
Safety Planning Over Contracts
Research shows that safety contracts (no-suicide contracts) are not effective and may provide false reassurance. The Stanley-Brown Safety Planning Intervention is the evidence-based standard (Stanley & Brown, 2012).
Means Restriction Counseling
Counseling clients and families about lethal means restriction (particularly firearms) is one of the highest-impact suicide prevention interventions. CE in means restriction counseling is valuable.
Document Thoroughly
When a client presents with suicidal ideation, thorough documentation of your risk assessment, clinical reasoning, and intervention plan is essential for both client care and liability protection.
Know Your Duty-to-Warn Obligations
State laws differ on duty-to-warn vs. duty-to-protect obligations when clients present imminent suicide risk. Know your state's specific legal requirements.
