Psychologist Prescribing Authority

Prescription Privileges for Psychologists

Six U.S. states currently grant prescribing authority to specially trained psychologists. Explore requirements, training pathways, and board resources for each state.

About Prescribing Authority: All states require completion of an APA-approved post-doctoral training program in clinical psychopharmacology (~400–450 didactic hours + supervised practicum), passage of the Psychopharmacology Examination for Psychologists (PEP) administered by the APA Practice Organization, and a collaborative agreement with a physician during a supervised prescribing period.
